Effective and painless wisdom teeth removal is an important part of our Kokomo oral surgery practice, as many of our patients require this service. The prospect of a wisdom tooth extraction, unfortunately, can bring on some anxiety.
At Kokomo Implant and Oral Surgery, we understand very well the worry and concern that any oral surgery or extraction procedure can generate. We are committed to creating a comfortable and caring environment, and the peace of mind that an experienced oral surgeon’s care provides.
Impacted Wisdom Teeth Extraction
The third molars — or the wisdom teeth, as they’re more commonly known — are the last of the adult teeth to emerge.
In most cases, the third molars begin to come in between the ages of 16 and 20, although the process may occur much later.
Third molars that are impacted fail to move into the proper position and may never break through the gums on their own. This can happen due to a lack of space in the mouth, or they may grow at an angle perpendicular to the rest of the teeth.
Impacted wisdom teeth must be removed before complications set in. Problems commonly include infection, crowding or misalignment of the other teeth, bone loss and gum disease.
Prevent Problems with Early Wisdom Teeth Removal
We begin monitoring our patients’ molar development once their adult teeth begin to come in. This way, if it is necessary to remove any wisdom teeth, we can do so before the roots have fully developed.
As the roots grow further into the jawbone, the tooth extraction itself becomes more difficult. In addition, the healing process may be longer with a greater chance for complications.
But those older patients who never had their third molars removed need not worry. It can be done safely and comfortably later in life as well. Just remember, the sooner these troublesome teeth come out, the fewer complications you can expect.
